so peta2 apparently is the "hip" version of peta - you know, for us "hip" college students. anyway, they were holding a demonstration today on campus with huge posterboards and such comparing animal cruelty to black cruelty (as in american slavery). people, as you can imagine, were angry. because if common sense serves me correctly it was exactly the same logic that RATIONALIZED human superiority/inferiority in the first place - comparing humans with animals and seeing who was "innately" gifted with "talents" as my friend kant says.

but the college peta people came to the office of student life where i work and they were really sad because people were throwing foodstuffs and they had to get the police.

Claire
You scored 65% kindness, 32% courage, 21% seedy past, and 41% secretiveness!

"Don't talk to me about the baby. I'm sick of everyone telling me what to do."

You are Claire. You are a very kind and caring person. You're not the
bravest on the island, but you will stand up for yourself when the need
arises. Compared to the other survivors, you have a pretty clean past
and you're open and honest about most things. It's a good thing, too -
Turniphead needs you to be nurturing and caring in order for him to
grow up and NOT become the antichrist. Luckily, Charlie seems more than
happy to assist you.

Your polar opposite is: Sawyer.
You are similar to: Charlie and Sun.

i did something super treacherous. i transferred my music from dell jukebox to itunes. I HATE ITUNES. but i had to in order to the music from my desktop to my ipod :(

dell jukebox is so intuitive... it has this option (which itunes lacks) that you can "open" and "close" album files so that total music list is not so long. you can also put in order indiviudal albums and artists. for example, if i have a mix cd, dell jukebox will not separate it bc it will be under ONE album with the various artists listed, along with the track numbers. i'm not sure if i'm explaining this clearly, but basically you can put the artists in alphateical order, and then according to that, put that artists' albums in aphabetical order. you can't do this on itunes bc the two categories are not linked. i also am having issues putting my mixed cd onto itunes unless it's on the "albums" option bc it will split up the artists otherwise.

i also dont like how itunes blends one song into the next without a separation. on dell jukebox, it's spaced automatically so that the songs dont blend into each other. i suppose you can do this on itunes, but i have no clue!

itunes is cuter though. and it's a lot faster than dell jukebox, but jukebox has better layout.

i feel like such a sellout haha.

so i am a mentor for a oakland high school sophomore this year (via OASES- Inspire program.. represent! :D). And we are having our first "hang out" session this friday (or tomorrow). I am SO nervous and excited at the same!! i can't wait. i wish i had a camera so i could put up pictures of my mentee she is SO cute. i am in love with her already! she says that her mom wants to meet me next week! but i'm really not nervous about that bc most grownups are either neutral or like me, but i really hope i am a good role model :)

.. taken from from an article published in 1999, a bit outdated...

The Limits of Liberal Multiculturalism
Meanwhile, U.C. Berkeley’s avowedly pro-affirmative action and pro-multiculturalist administration is undermining what has been perhaps the most prestigious united Ethnic Studies program in the country [HELL YEAH REPRESENT.. too bad about the "undermining" part]. The administration has refused to allow the program to replace four retiring faculty, and a number of other faculty are set to retire soon [one of which is the incrrredible RON TAKAKI!! super famous, celebrity type of historian/sociologist.. kind of like JEFFREY SACHS! :)].

Moreover, Ethnic Studies offers only half as many courses on race as do other departments. And, with the demise of affirmative action, there are fewer students of color to enroll in Ethnic Studies classes. Since its peak of 400 in the early 1990s, the number of Ethnic Studies majors has dropped by half [i think it's better now].

Ethnic Studies chairperson Ling-chi Wang, one of the founders of the program in 1969, is blunt: “I truly believe without a serious change, Ethnic Studies [at Berkeley] will die within the decade.”

To stem the bleeding, Wang, backed by African American Studies Department chairperson Percy Hintzen, put forward a controversial proposal to merge Ethnic Studies and African American Studies into American Studies, the equivalent of an academic hostile takeover [don't worry guys, this didn't happen]

interesting, hrm?

So I recently wanted this album called "Apologies to the Queen Mary" by the Wolf Parade, and then I realized I've had it for almost two months already hahahaha. oops. sometimes i feel like i have so much random music i forget what i have and what i dont. =P anyway, i recommend wolf parade, they are SUPER good. :)

from rivers cuomo's blog:

All Day I Dream About Sex

I gave up my shoes finally, the black campers with massive sole erosion. I’m on to some new adidas. I wish my feet weren’t so screwed up. The rest of my body too, for that matter. Why am I such a mutant?
Anyway, I wonder if these new adidas will stick. My big toes already ache a bit (c.f., Eddie Johnson). They’re leather too, I think. I wish I could find some totally non-animal product shoes that didn’t totally suck. Man, the world’s messed up. It’s so hard to be a good person because everything’s set up for cruel exploitation. It’s just so easy and convenient to exploit along with all the rest.

Ahh, animals. Kids, too. Will I ever have dependents? Only time will tell.

And the new adidas? Only time will tell.

i'm pretty much obsessed with:

spoon (sooo good), rufus wainwright (val.... i remember your rufus buddy icon from high school haha)

and ive regotten into the wallflowers. i really liked them a while ago, then stopped listening to them, but now im in love with them again. ha.

i think wainwright's lyrics are pretty clever. his voice kind of takes some time to get used to. it seems so emotion-less at first, but it's grown on me.

ive been so obsessed with michael jackson lately, i don't know why. i just love "thriller" it's so awesome. i've had it forever, but i never really gave it a second thought, but now i'm rather fond of my skin-pigment challenged friend.

i think my fav songs are "billie jean" and "p.y.t (pretty young thing)"

i'm rather behind on work, as well, i should get on it.

here are a list of books i've read for school thus far:

confounding the color line: the black-indian experience (edited by james brook)

moving violations by john hockenberry (if you liked heartbreaking work of staggering genius you'd probably like this, too.)

autobiography of a face by lucy grealy

the cry of the gull by emmanuelle laborit

dreams from my father by barack obama (i highly recommend this)

truth and beauty by ann patchett (really interesting)

ceremony by leslie marmon silko

monkey hunting by cristina garcia

and also a bunch of readers. fuck, that reminds me im behind in my reading in ethnic studies 10. well not really behind, just not ahead. whenever im not ahead for a class, i feel behind. i remember for math classes, i used to do my homework like two weeks in advance. im so obsesive compulsive.

i wish my saratoga friends were up here in berkeley with me. sometimes i feel like berkeley and the people who go here are just not my thing.

so, first days are not so good for me usually. last year, I thought it was monday when it was tuesday. and today as i went to chicano studies, the teacher informed me at the end of class that all sophomore would be dropped unless they were declared chicano/ethnic studies majors. um.... i was dropped, am four units short, and bought two of the books.

howeeeever, i then went to the chicano studies department and confirmed that i was really dropped (i was..) but the lady was really nice and helped me figure out my schedule. so now i am taking ethnic studies 150ac: people of mixed racial descents. i wanted to take that, but i don't like the time: wedn, friday from 4-530. grr! but now i dont start mon, wedn, friday until 12. what a waste of time. i know im not going to do anything in the morning.

12:02 am - southern california, here i come...
so... i am leaving for southern california on a road trip wednesday morning with frances. we will see ching, patrick, aileen, my older brother, and hopefully if all goes well... the general la/san diego region haha. :)

i cannot stress enough how i cannot believe my mother is letting me do this. but in the wisdom of frances, my mother can't really tell me what to do when i'm at college, so why wouldn't she trust me to do whatever in socal?

ah, but you see...

in a harry potter sort of way, if you can call your house a home, then your mother is your homekeeper isn't she? and she thinks she knows best, and will punish you (or me) accordingly...

current mood: excited

i had the most stressful morning. i almost cried like three times and garh! i guess i just don't handle stress well because there is nothing i can do about it. i guess that feeling bothers me the most: knowing that something is wrong and that i am absolutely powerless to do anything to fix it. and it was a financial problem so it just kind of worrisome, but it's been mostly resolved now, thank goodness.

so what did i do when i was stressed? the same old: i called up chris, made up an excuse to be pissed off at him (i was kind of already, but not really). i probably owe him an apology. poor guy.
